I wanted to start with the roast of coffee that convinced me to start this blog. I always used to consider myself a coffee amateur. To me, coffee was coffee. McDonald’s, Starbucks, it didn’t really matter to me where the coffee came from, especially if I made it at home. Whatever k-cups were on sale were the k-cups I came home with. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon this particular roast when I was at a friend’s house, that I realized I had been wrong for so many years.
This k-cup consistently makes the best cup of I have ever made at home. By no means have I tried every pod of coffee out there, but these are at the top of my current list.
Gevalia is a Swedish brand, but produces something along the lines of Turkish coffee. This is some of the only coffee that I can actually drink black. The flavor is bold and potent, yet smooth and palatable. There is no bitterness or acidity, no kick, and it doesn’t really linger in the mouth. The slight aftertaste is actually somewhat pleasant.
The most important thing to me is how this coffee smells. It doesn’t smell fruity, like most generic brands of coffee do. It doesn’t smell burnt or over roasted, and it doesn’t smell flat and watered down. There is nothing that distracts you from the richness of the roast. The smell is full, bold, and deep. It will quickly fill the room, and make you all the more excited for your morning to start.
Now, when they say Dark Roast, they truly mean it. The flavor of the coffee still shines through a healthy addition of cream and sugar. It will not become muted by a few splashes of milk, yet it won’t make you have to keep adding and adding milk to cut the acidity, until your coffee is the color of a sheet of paper. This roast seems to be the perfect balance of dark intensity, and smooth flavor. Despite being available at every grocery story, Gevalia managed to hit the nail on the head with this roast.
